Gay Purr-ee (A Little Golden Book)
UPA's kitty kat klassic, Gay Purr-ee (1962) features great Chuck Jones animation and the top notch voice talents of Judy Garland, Robert Goulet, Red Buttons, Paul Frees, and Mel Blanc. It's a simple cartoon tale of boy cat loves girl cat - boy cat loses girl cat - boy cat finds girl cat again, and thus all is well in Paris, France. And the Little Golden Book version featured in today's post is pretty sweet too! I hope everyone enjoys what is sure to be the first of many LGB posts here.

ReplyDeleteOne neat lil tidbit of trivia concerning the making of Gay Purr-ee the film:
"Chuck Jones had been under an exclusive contract with Warner Bros., and worked on Gay Purr-ee in violation of his contract. After Warner Bros. picked it up from UPA for distribution, they discovered his involvement and fired him, resulting in his departure for MGM."

ReplyDeleteRegarding Jones sacking over Gay Purr-ee - Wow! Warner's played rough! But what choice, really, did the producers have, and Jones? If you were going to have cute cats (or cute animals - in the best sense of "cute") - you had to go Chuck Jones! And how could Jones resist the offer?

ReplyDeleteA side note - there's an episode of THE TONIGHT SHOW when it was still hosted by Jack Parr (this would have been his last last) where Judy Garland and Robert Goulet not only come on to promote the film but do they sing a couple of duets,too!
ReplyDeleteThankfully it's one of the shows that still exists - if they ever do a blu-ray on the film, it would make a great extra!
