Those of you that collect vintage 50's - 60's squeak toys know that Alan Jay's name inscribed anywhere on it = extra cute, unusual / unique, and highly collectable. Bobby Shaftoe has been in my collection for a few years now, and with his adorable, skull 'n crossboned, doo-ragged head, this puny pirate peers through his spyglass, eyeing something scary on the horizon! Yes, it's his best gal, Little Miss Muffet, and she's about to sit on a big 'ol spider! I mentioned "unusual" before, and both squeakers certainly apply-- from Bobby's funny squatted pose at the bow of his lil blue boat, to the white coloring of the spider instead of black or brown, (possibly so it's not to real looking and sending mom off screaming into the kitchen for the can of Raid every time she sees it!) Fun toys, they definitely don't make 'em like this anymore. For more spidery fun, CLICK HERE!
I assume all of these -- based on the time and how the paint looks -- were painted by hand with an air brush. I really like that look, some lines over, some lines a little under, and how they fade with usage (especially the pirate one.) It gives them these really interesting worn looks.
ReplyDeleteThe expressions on both are just great!
Ha ha. Looks like the Little Miss already sat down on that spider. That's one toy that should squeak extra loud, frankly. A shriek toy.
