How about lots of cute Halloween art highlights from the Oct. '46 issue of Children's Play Mate Magazine? Plus, games, poems, fun party projects and more! So many great artists worked on this issue, but boy I sure do love the unique illustrative style of Fern Bisel Peat, a name that more people should absolutely be familiar with as she stayed consistently busy applying her distinctive doodlry on many children's books throughout most of the 1900's, until her death in 1971.

My favorite is "Witch Dance." The movement in that is exquisite. You can follow the line of the movement through the broom to the witch, her hair, the cat (it's great how it leans back) and finally the broom and the tail of her dress.
That's a really good eye for fluid motion. Beautiful piece of work.
Amazing art and a wonderful piece of the past. Love when blogs like you post stuff like this, cause it might be the only place this was posted and preserved for the future to enjoy. So thank you!
Her style lends itself perfectly for nursery rhymes and other similar tales.
Some of the witch's faces have an elf like look to them, a rare thing to see when witches are drawn.
Last page, The witch contest, here is my answer to Doree's limerick
There once was a witch named Doree
Who lived in a shabby old tree,
But she said, "I don't care
I'm quite comfortable there-
-because the rent and utilities are free!"
I can't argue with any of you. Peat's cover is great. Tuite's black and white interior work is superb (I really like the two enlarged masked kids best I think, bu it's neat how much range she demonstrated from piece to piece here). Honestly, I'm totally smitten with whoever drew the "ghostly greetings" ghostly scream" pair, too. That might be the cutest ever lil' pirate.
This is my favorite kind of Halloween stuff. Thanks!
>because the rent and utilities are free!"
Ha! Thanks for adding that, very funny :)
More halloween treats on the way... I seriously can't believe we're almost halfway through October already!
