I have a lot of friends with birthdays in October, so this post goes out to every single one of 'em, --even those who aren't smokers (*gag! choke! cough!) It's yet another funny 'ol boxed up gag gift mailer from the 60's, open it up to get the joke and the stink remedy punchline, plus some cool, monstery lookin' illustrated people puffin' it up. The line at the very bottom calls the clothespins "imported cigarette holders", but I find it funnier to think of them as scent saving nose pinchers.
Unless I'm missing something I'm kind of surprised there isn't some kind of gag on the outside that leads to a punchline inside, which is usually how these work!
ReplyDeleteI love the hair on the woman; it looks like one of those mazes you'd get back in a book from the school book fair days, and I love the weird kind of angry kind of happy expressions. Again, really great expressive art with just a couple lines!
These come in useful in the states that legalized weed.
ReplyDeleteThey might as well call marijuana Skunk Weed, man that stuff smells awful.
This is definitely one of the more conceptually interpretive of the old Spencer's prefab gag gift boxes. I love the cartoon style and feel like it's by an artist I've seen before. Same time, I guess maybe that was a popular look at the time, so maybe everybody was doing it. Printing the whole card blue and leaving white cut outs is very subtle and effective.
ReplyDeleteI feel like I've seen this illustrator before too, and probably even posted a few things here at AEET by 'em as well...
