Millie the Model in the Haunted House

A really funny Stan Lee and Dan DeCarlo team-up can be found in the April 1955 issue of Mille the Model Comics #59, where everyone's favorite fashion model is up to her pampered armpits in the supernatural --while on a photo shoot in a haunted house! Ghosts 'n giggles and gorgeous gams galore-- what more could you ask for? Oh yeah, how about some extra spicy Chili!

  1. I know it's a comic, and exaggeration is important, but I can't buy that the redhead is somehow terrifyingly hideous and Millie is a face that launched a thousand ships. They are drawn with exactly the same body, and nearly identical face. Only the hair really tells them apart!

Stan really got a big signature on this one!

Lots of fun setup/joke gags, very comic-strip-y of the time. I love how the ghost doesn't seem to realize how much he's frightening people. BTW, isn't the ghost kind of a peeper here? He watched her change!

  2. I definitely think Atlas got the best possible work out of DeCarlo. I think by '55, Dan's characters are all starting to look like templates, a handful of stoks images he can churn out on the fly. But then the ghost here is just great. He stands fluidly, and his facial expression is subtle and pitch perfect in every panel. Almost like he was drawn by Bob Oksner or somebody instead.

It's never really her looks they're implying are terrifyingly hideous, it's her awful bitchy attitude towards Millie and everyone else in the comic series.

I absolutely agree, panel 5 on the last page for example is such a great composition, a very funny visual full of fluid motion and still manages to maintain a spooky air of atmosphere. I kind of wish there was an ominous haunted house exterior shot at the top of page two, only so we could see it looming before them as they entered.
