The Girls of Montgomery Ward '71 (PART ONE)

Boy, if you didn't get enough straw hat action in my previous Huck Finn Halloween costume post HERE, then today you've come to the right place! See, someone at Montgomery Ward knew what the heck they were doing when they came up with the cute concept of photographing their fresh faced models wearing straw hats (and in one case, painted on freckles!) for their Summer 1971 catalog chapter devoted to patio furniture and lawn chairs. We even get a couple of trippin' dudes in the background doing a groovier Tom & Huck fence painting routine! But now now, this post is about the ladies, and I even worked up some insert enlargements (*clears throat) so you can get a better look at their, umm, straw hats, pigtails, and --river rafting poles?!! This catalog is actually loaded with adorable stuff like this, and we'll be taking a look at some more highlights in the next post too. So set a spell. Take your shoes off. Ya'll come back now, ya hear? (PART TWO is now available HERE!)

  1. Now I know models barely hiding their embarrassment of what they do for money is sort of a staple here :) ... but man those lawn chairs.

    Those lawn chairs!

Every one of those folding metal brackets is a finger biting monster and if you dare to lay on one of those without a full set of clothes that plastic weave will take a pound of skin, which is good because the metal bars across half of them would make you numb, anyway ... or maybe that was just me!

    1. Oh brother! You really do excel in commenting with the exact opposite vibe of an original post intention. Congratulations on your consistency :P

  2. These pseudo-hillbilly honeys are quite fetching, especially the last one.
Do you think any of them dated the Ozark Halfwit? Don`t judge. It was the heyday of Hee Haw.

  3. It dawns on me that all of this furniture is pretty well camouflaged. Green and brown, flower and leaf patterned, etc. Were they worried about helicopter surveillance? I mean, that makes a certain amount of sense up in the hills. Lord knows what's brewing back there.

I like the looks of the bread in that picnic basket. Once these polka-dotted lasses are done posin', I suspect they'll take their poles down to the fishin' hole and catch the rest of their sandwiches. I approve!

  5. Recall this was the same era as Mountain Dew/Mellow Yellow & The Country Bears. What the heck was going on?!
Almost as hysterical was the Sears short-lived 'grunge' attempt...

  6. I will continue my durndest to bring hillbilly culture back into the spotlight, one straw hat and barefooted beauty at a time --you can bet yer bottom dollar on that, my friends!

PART TWO a'comin' round the mountain shortly, stay dew'd!
