Voodoo Doll!

It's Friday so you know what that means-- fr-fr-fr-fright time! From the December 1966 issue of Creepy #12, with amazing art by Jerry Grandenetti and a perfectly tight, superbly spooky script by the always reliable Archie Goodwin, this is another choice example why Warren horror magazines were pretty much unbeatable in the supernatural 60's-- and beyond!

  1. Yeah, Goodwin, and old hand at Marvel and pretty much (with Russ Jones) responsible for how good those early Warren horror mags were. He did one of my favorite non-horror bits, "Cave of Druids," which had a great character Warren should have used more.

I love the art on this, something you can't really do in a 4-color or better comic, with all the gray tones and washes. Gives it a very 40 Universal B&W feel.

Never knew Mary Tyler Moore was so evil, though!

  2. I love Enid's groovy tights. And the trippy lava lamp figure drawing of her bandaged hand on page three. This is mostly just really nice, moody, brushy cartooning all the way through. All of page two is wonderful: Normally, I'm a little skeptical of gimmicky paneling, but I really dig how the two-part double panel collage at the top mirrors the two-part single panel panorama at the bottom.

    TGIF.

  3. This would have made a great story on an anthology TV show (Night Gallery, Twilight Zone, Alfred Hitchcock Presents, etc.)

This tale is just what we need on Frightening Fridays!

  4. Grandenetti excelled at many art styles, and while I love his early Eisner mode stuff from the precode golden era, I think it's the later supernatural silver age stuff from him that I actually like best. If anyone needs a reminder, there's nearly a half dozen examples archived over at THOIA to check out, just click here:

Thanks for the comments-- more Friday Frights every Friday!
