KING KONG KRUSH(ed)

A couple of KING KONG funnies reprinted for the May 1974 issue of The Monster Times #33. Sacrifice originally appeared in The Monster Times #7 (art by Steve Hickman and story by Joe Simons), while the one panel gag originally appeared in the adult men's magazine, Cavalier.

  1. Thank you Mr.K. for these contrasting Kongs.

  2. I feel like all the Steve Hickman I've ever seen in my life were bright orange fantasy book covers, nominally in the Boris mold. I seem to recall a lot of sword fighting cat-headed people, that kind of thing. But this kind of thing I haven't seen before. Besides the humor--I really dig the rocket unicycle and that frame of Kong's gaping maw--this has some of the most organized and clear brush work I've seen in a while. I mean, I'm very impressed that he can render in this overly mechanical way but still never totally disappear into the kind of awkward, inert images that usually result from an over-reliance on technique.

  3. That's some fine-lined work from Hickman. Very impressive!

My favorite is still the one-panel gag strip. The art is scratchy but cool, I like the washed look and the expression on Kong is priceless, it really sells the joke.
