Mature Ham
There seems to be a handful of funny golden era comics about working girls trying to make it big in Hollywood (see my Mopsy post HERE for more), and this particular Peggy Dean tale from the February 1954 issue of Meet Merton #2 mixes silly jungle film set action with a few bits of good girl art, minimal dialog, and maybe even a poke or two at actor legend, Victor Mature (maybe?)

Looks like the artist blended Victor Mature with Johnny Weissmuller.
ReplyDeleteSheesh, this is super. I see there's no guess on the artist. It's neat work, though. I'm not sure I would have known that was a Dave Berg cover, either. It's like he's in full-on Bob Oksner (or maybe Montana) mode.

ReplyDeleteNot to criticize the artist, but in the last panel the brunette has legs too big for her body, or her hips are too small for her frame. Either way you look at it she looks out of proportion. Just a minor detail to a fun story.
ReplyDeleteEnjoyed this very much. Nice art all throughout. I don't have a sarcasm meter, but I think the length of those gams was the whole point. Caricature that I appreciated. Thank you Mr.K. for all you do.
ReplyDeleteI don't understand his reaction. He asked Chiquita for it, didn't he? (BTW, that remark first reminded me of Gail Simone's Women In Refrigerators, before I thought it more likely meant she'd warmed up to him.)
ReplyDeleteAccording to the GCD, this is the third of four appearances for Peggy. The others are credited to Jack Sparling.
