Sugar Bear in "The Great Gold Robbery"

When I was a kid, the Super Sugar Crisp commercials were pretty much the best thing on tv --check youtube HERE if you need a quick schoolin' on this fact! Great animation, voice acting, and top notch writing really sealed it... and though the cereal wasn't actually my fave, hot dog I sure did love Sugar Bear the character mascot! Eventually a series of lil premium Sugar Bear comic book adventures became available around that same time-- found buried inside the cereal boxes! They captured the same fun and all round silly spirit of the tv commercials, with the spectacularly stylized art and hilarious dialogue. Here's one example from my collection, recently unearthed from a box, and boy was I ever surprised, (and very very glad) to discover I still had this! Starring the smooth talkin', quick thinkin' Sugar Bear himself, plus Granny, and their evil arch nemesis "The Blob", these 16 pages pretty much sum up what my 70's cartoon and cereal childhood was all about :)

  4. Man, Sugar Bear is the coolest. I love those commercials. This comic is cool because it has a real off-the-cuff feel to it, just like the comics we used to make in school at the time. Nobody penciled and inked this. Hell, I'm not sure they wrote more than one draft. It feels like they just made it up as they went along, easy breezy.

  5. "Nobody penciled and inked this".

Still, I'd really like to know who the artist was.
Looks like some Ward-Scott Production stuff. I immediately thought about Tom Slick or Super Chicken, but I'm probably wrong.

  6. I always thought Sugar Bear's voice was modeled after Dean Martin, but turns out it was Bing Crosby.

J_D_La_Rue_67, you're probably not far off on the Ward-Scott guess. They did other cereal commercials such as Captain Crunch and Quisp. If not by Ward Production, definitely in the style of.

As an aside, I hate that it's been renamed Super Golden Crisp. It's SUGAR!!!!
