Artist's Sketch Pad '56: Joyce Ballantyne

I purchased my first, and certainly not last, Artist's Sketch Pad / calendar (Brown & Bigelow, St. Paul, MINN 1956) today at a local antique show. Being a huge fan of Joyce Ballantyne I couldn't pass it up, even at the hefty price the seller was asking. I spent most of the day photographing her incredibly attractive images because the overall size of the calendar eclipses my scanner. I wanted to show these stunning works of art at a larger size than the American Art Archives has them posted (see HERE for more), my apologies for any quality issues.

  2. Aw, she's really the best ever.

I really like the August page best, as much I hate to admit it. I'm a little ticked that my birthday comes right in the middle of three months' worth of lame hunting-themed pin-ups. I would really like to see more car-themed stuff, or, obviously, October holiday-themed stuff. But whatever--it's still awesome.

I like the skimpily dressed woodcutter on February's page, too. I like that union suit. Apparently, she goes to bed dressed much, much less skimpily than she does chores.

Thanks for doing all the work to post these, Karswell. I can't believe you managed this kind of quality with a camera. You must have been adjusting color balances for hours.

  3. Karswell: Whatever price you paid, it was worth it. This so such beautiful stuff! Her painting is incredible, and her draftsmanship is flawless.

  4. Spent about an hour or so, once I get the photos into photoshop it's just a matter of color correcting and adjusting a few levels here and there... thanks Mr. C!

I like the hunting stuff, even though I'm not a hunter and I despise hunting. My fave though is the bowling month. I'm not much if a bowler either but damn those are some super cute illustrations. Hell, they're all amazing.
