Happy Birthday (To Me!) Part One

Next to the Valentines, "get well" and Xmas catagories, birthday greeting cards make up the real bulk of my personal card collection. So here we have a nice selection ranging from as far back as the 1940's, up to the 1970's, and all displaying incredibly fun design and illustrative genius. FYI: the first 3 cards were actually given to me by relatives (um, ask my aunt about the first one!), and the rest were all purchased later via ebay, antique malls etc... I'll have more for you in Part Two coming up around midweek. Enjoy!

  1. Well, that top one certainly stands out! Next time I expect some dude eye candy! ;-)
Love those dinosaur ones. I was the biggest dinosaur geek as a kid...okay, still am! As a youngster, I wanted to be a paleontologist. And an astronaut. I was going to be one of the first people to explore the entire solar system, I tell ya!

  2. Even your aunt knows about you, buddy.

Loved the cards. I wish I'd saved all the funky birthday cards I got. I'd have a big stack of them by now! Since I go way back I'd have my own collection of vintage cards.

But I digress...for some reason I like the great drawing on the cannibal card the most, even though it's the most incorrect. You just wouldn't see anything like this today outside of the KKK bookstore.

  3. Happy, Hapy Birthday from ALL of us out here!!!!

Though, judging from that first card...the potential was already there...

  4. So much great stuff, but I gotta go with (no, not the first one!) the "Can't give you a goose on your birthday" one. Such great art and and such a flippant concept.

  5. Hey! Wait a minute! There are only 8 candles on that first card! Yipes!

  6. Happy Birthday. I think I'm detecting a trend in my own tastes that I never really knew about, but I think my very favorite thing here is those clothes on that second, Beatles-inspired card. Like the Bavarian roadsters and that Easter Cowboy that you posted previously, there is just something about the attention to colorful textile patterns that I'm really digging. though I think I would have had to draw an aftermarket Scoobie Doo on there just to shake up the pop cultural mash (much like I'd have had to pen a Dino onto that caveman card). Great selections!

  8. Thanks for the comments and b-day wishes friends, means alot to me! I'll have Part Two uploaded sometime Tues afternoon hopefully (scanning these actually takes alot more time that you can imagine).

A few notes about some of Part One:

    1. I can't remember how old I was when I got this sexy card from my aunt, and as much as I loved it, you know my mom HATED it with equal force.

    2. In perfect Auntie contrast, I got this groovy card from my other aunt.

    3. Yes, the pink dino on the front of this card is FUZZY!!

    9. Yep, that's a real plastic bubble on the front of the card-- I love cool additions like this on greeting cards!!

    11. I hope everyone read the tiny insert diet weight loss booklet, it's truly hysterical!

    12. This old card from either the 1930's or 40's was obviously illustrated by Al Columbia in a previous life.
