Cocktails Cuervo

Time for another 1960's boozer booklet, and in celebration of Cinco De Mayo today, it just so happens to coincidently cover Cuervo Tequila. And since I find alcohol to be absolutely the most repulsive thing on the planet, I will instead steer your eyes away from the cocktail recipes and over to the colorfully illustrated pages opposite featuring Mr. Booze Bird in a variety of masterfully rendered scenes, each signed by someone named  "De La Vega." Anyone know anything about this artist?

  1. Some of these illos remind me of the great Chuck Jones work. Maybe he had an 'Adult' pseudonym for work outside the biz ?

  2. If the drug wars in Mexico didn't make the whole country seem inhospitable enough, now I find the streets and countryside are littered with drunken crows?? Crows are scary enough without having agave riddled livers to addle their distrubed minds even more. !

  4. I'm the most repulsive thing on the planet. Alcohol only makes me less so. To me, that is.

Great illustrations. De La Vega? As in Diego "Zorro" De La Vega?

Whoever it is, they are definitely in league with that caliber of artist, for sure.

So are we looking at a crow here, or magpie, or what? I was kind of getting a Heckle & Jeckle vibe.

    Thanks JIll, I agree!

Haha, that's the first thing I thought too, Hairy. Googling the name is no help either, unfortunately...

  7. Hey nice art! When it comes to birds I'm always at sea. In my own natural habitat (the Southeast of the US) there are no yellow-billed corvidae, so growing up it always annoyed me that all crows and ravens and things seem to be drawn in this very way. Heckle and Jeckle are supposed to be be Magpies? No way! They don't even have the distinguishing white shoulders. They look way more like mynah birds.

Since then, of course, I've lived in other parts of the world and seen jays and magpies and crows with yellow bills. But not in Mexico, where the large crows and ravens are black from tip to tail. So I still say this looks more like a mynah bird.

    Happy Battle of Puebla Day.

Yeah, when Paul Tery first created them they were actually called "The Talking Magpies." They were even husband and wife!

  9. I've gone a few rounds with Jose Cuervo in my time. Those days are gone forever, especially now that I'm on blood pressure meds, but hey, I must have been drinking for the present and the future back when!

  10. I took a lick off a tequila lollipop one time when I was in Mexico... it even hd a worm in it. That's really all I have to say about any of it.

  11. The alcohol booklets of that time seemed to have better color printing than other freebie booklets -- or maybe it's my perception.
Maybe they figured everyone would be spilling drinks on it, so they used better, glossy paper?
