We're kickin' off July 2026 whilst kickin' up our heels with a collection of oppressive dance moves courtesy of this swingin', midcentury, Arthur Murray (Dance Studios) waaay back magazine back issue. Yes sir, Murray-Go-Round is absolutely full of great photos and fun articles, in particular, the "do's and don'ts" of proper / improper dance floor / ballroom etiquette. And of course, the "don'ts" are way more interesting than the "do's", so that's what we'll focus on today for all the show-offs, hikers, hoggers, and marathon champs (you know who you are!) reading this helpful, timeless info. Okay then, have yourselves a ball, and to the ladies: please feel free to grind your face powder into my dinner jacket. Honestly, --I don't mind!
Well this has to be the best publication I never knew existed! Any clue what year said issue came out? Asking for a friend…and her scandalously promiscuous face powder.
ReplyDeleteP.S. A moment of appreciation for the copywriter of yore who absolutely nailed it when penning this title. Murray-Go-Round?! Total mic drop. And there are still Arthur Murray studios out there! I was just about to start at one in L.A. before I moved. 🥲
Haha, I believe there's still a Murray Studio in Manchester MO, no? Time to sashay your way back into the sway-- today!
DeleteThis issue is from 1962!
Love the art for the show off. And the art for that other show-off, the dress hiker. By the time I was hitting the dance floor, the ladies had their hems in hand, and they did all their own hiking.
ReplyDeleteLike that multiple exposure cover image, too.
Both artists seem very familiar to me, but I can’t quite place them
DeleteWhere was this magazine when I was kicked out of the dance hall for being a floor hog? It would have been nice to be warned!
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is the "resolved to do or die." I love the expressions and the motion of the dance.
