I probably say this every year at the start of fall, but us grill hounds never let the changing of seasons or a little cold weather stop us from BBQ'ing! Same can be said for you year round booze hounds too, I imagine. So today I present the first half of the beautifully illustrated, Seagram's Week End Bar and Barbecue Book (from the 50's or 60's, I couldn't find a date on it anywhere.) It's over 30 pages of heavenly recipes and the drinks that accompany these dishes best, plus, juicy Joe Kaufman imagery, --and for once I'll just leave it at that and let the scans do the mouth waterin' talkin'. Part 2 covers breads, salads, hors d'oeuvres, punches, and even clambakes, and will be up as soon as I'm done eating this slab of rare Steak Marchand De Vin with Worchestershire spread-- yum!

The Naked Truth

Hate to spill the beans, but there's only 5 days of summer left! Now for you fall freaks, that is of course grand spankin' good news, but for you boys (and some girls) that go bonkers for babes in bikinis, it's definitely the end of the world! So, as things sadly wind down around here-- bare fleshedly speaking-- let us take a look at a few sexy fun old 1940's beach bunny postcards from my collection, to remind you that summer 2020 is really only another 276 goddamn days away :(

Kitsch Skier

Another neato thing I found recently was this kitschy asian skier, made of carved and painted wood, stretched cotton (for snow), and colorful stuffed fabric pieces of varying textile. It's about 6" tall, plus there's a lone nail sticking up in the back which makes me think that maybe something's missing from my newly acquired, vintage tourist knick-knack. He does look a bit sad holding his skis and hanging out under that sign waiting for some snow to fall (BTW: does anyone know what the sign says? Google Translate literally exploded when I attempted to figure it out myself!)



I guess I wasn't helping matters by photographing him on my deck with about a week of summer left here in 2019, so in an attempt to turn that frown upside down, I took a second photo of him against a white wall (to simulate a more wintery setting), and good lord, if he doesn't look even more miserably cute! Ahhh well, I tried. I'm assuming this is from the 60's or maybe 70's, or could be even earlier. I can't get enough of that adorable tiny lantern suspended above his head either!

Fashion School Original Art (60's)

Found this neat piece of original 60's fashion school art yesterday at an antique mall --there was actually close to 20 different pieces by this same artist, (Judy Hicky?) but this one was my clear cut favorite. Lovely, simple line art that is very evocative of the time, and what really set this piece apart from the others was the center of the presentation board being cut-away and a piece of actual fabric glued into the window. The backside of the piece states that this was Project #2 for Judy, and ooops, did she turn it in a few days late? Well, I do hope she received a good grade on it, because I really love it. And Judy, if you somehow see this post, drop me a line and let me know how your career in fashion went after graduating! NOTE: the antique mall seller was actually there in her booth when I bought this and said she thought that Judy went to Washington University, STL MO. She was also a little foggy on how she acquired all of this art by her, but seemed to remember maybe buying everything in a bundle at a flea market in Belleville, IL.)

Yep, your Saturday mornings are just about to get a lot more colorful with a cool cavalcade line-up mix of cartoon classics, PLUS some brand spankin' new shows as well: Underdog, The Pink Panther, The Houndcats, Roman Holidays, The Barkleys, Sealab 2020, Runaround, Talking With a Giant, and Around the World in 80 Days!!! It's gonna be great-- so be sure to tune in this 1972!

The Addams Family Game (Milton Bradley, 1973)

Another lucky antique mall find-- at a wonderfully affordable price-- and it couldn't have come at a better time of the season either, what with Halloween right around the corner! This is a very fun Milton Bradley board game from 1973 based on one of my all time favorite TV shows, The Addams Family! (Did you hear the catchy theme song and the fingers snap in your head just now? You know you did!) While actually modeled after the Hanna-Barbara cartoon series from the same year, the object of the game (in typical Addams fashion) is of course to do the exact OPPOSITE of what you'd expect from a normal board game --and LOSE! Loads of fun, spooky artwork and bright kooky colors (but not too bright), even the spinner is imbedded in a creepy spider web! So yeah, don't be so quick to jump in your grave and end it all, especially when you could be slipping on rocks, falling off waterfalls, jump ropin' a python, or arm wrestlin' octopi! *SNAP! SNAP!

Electric Nose Cleaner

A silly vintage novelty gag gift in a box that I saw at an antique mall yesterday-- and one that instantly made me ponder two things: Is this the finger prop they used as the Tall Man's severed finger in the first Phantasm film? And second, how many people actually used this squirmy thing in their nose and not in / on some other random body opening? From the person who has everything-- the world may never know!
