Things have been pretty gory over at THOIA this month, so maybe it's time to let the rivers of red flow fiercely free here at AEET as well! And okay, I've seen quite a few vintage first aid guides in my day, but daaaang, none have made even 'ol Mr. Karswell flinch as much as this First Aid for Airmen booklet from 1956. The stark contrast of black and white illustrated imagery, mixed with brightly colored splashes of blood can be just as gruesomely unnerving as it is informative and helpful. And just when you think you've had enough wanton wound action, there's still a few images from the bone fractures and radiation burn chapters yet to contend with-- AIEEEE!!

AIEEEE!!! Is right!
ReplyDeleteNow we know where they got the idea for splatter films.

DeleteWell this manual is incomplete, there's no chapter on what to do if a green glowing orb knocks down your plane and turns everybody into a zombie!
ReplyDeleteBetter call Dr. Quest on that one!
DeleteOh you KNOW it’s effective when it even gives Karswell the heeby-jeebies! That has to be the best use of spot-color printing ever, yowsers 😳😅
ReplyDelete*Heebie Jeebies activated!
DeleteLooking at these made me wince, especially the open fracture one.
ReplyDeleteAIEEEE!
DeleteWhoa that last one is really great. Looks like a Wally Wood.
ReplyDeleteIn EMT school, we were taught to treat a sucking chest wound with a flap of plastic, or something that would seal, taped own on three sides. That way it releases pressure when the patient exhales, but closes and prevents sucking air back into the chest cavity trough the hole in the chest wall when he inhales, which is the action that collapses the lung. Course, in practice that can be really difficult to do is there's a lot of bleeding.
This post gave be classroom flashbacks!
Ahhh fractures memories
DeleteI guess the big takeaway for me from this booklet is that replacing protruding organs is a no-no. I mean, in every movie you see where someone’s intestines start spilling out, the next reaction seems to be to shove ‘em right back inside! *faints
